Video: 3 DIY Choker Necklaces

10 Mar

Jewelry is a pretty prevalent topic around here, and I love any excuse to talk about it. Up until now, I’ve only worn/found jewelry that’s made by other brands and designers. Honestly, it’s probably going to stay that way, but I wanted to try something new and attempt to make my own for once. Luckily, the “jewelry” I made only involved some suede fabric and a little creativity, but it’s totally relevant to the choker trend that’s everywhere right now.

I’ve always digged the choker necklace look, and have quite a few in my jewelry collection. Right now however, fabric choker’s seem to be all the rage, and I can totally see why. They bring back that 90s vibe everyone longs after, and they add a little drama to your look. I’ve seen so many variations on this trend, but wanted to put my own spin on it.

I knew I wanted to go with a suede fabric to give it a nicer feel. Also, this soft suede molds really nicely into any position you try to put it in, and it stays in place. Did I mention that each roll of suede ribbon only cost me $2 each? Yeah, you need to get to Michael’s and Hobby Lobby stat!

You’ll have to watch the video to get the tutorials on all three of these, but you can put it together in under a minute.

The first necklace I made is probably the boldest of the bunch. It’s a light brown suede with edgy gold embellishments. I made this to go around my neck three times to make for a dramatic statement. This one transported me back to the 90s, but also gave me a modern day vibe, as well!

Next up, I had to do something feminine. I used a piece of black suede string to tie a cute and neat little bow around the front of my neck. This bow choker would pair perfectly with an off-the-shoulder top.

Lastly, I opted for a mix between choker and lariat. Using the same black suede, I first created a choker and finished it off with a chic lariat. You can definitely make these necklaces a lot crazier, but I wanted to keep mine simple and free of any beads or other materials. What’s nice about doing it yourself is that you can customize it to your heart’s desire. I’ve seen a few fabric choker necklaces out there that are upwards of $50. I’m all about dropping money on high quality pieces, but in this case it makes so much more sense to go the DIY route.

You are too crafty, girlfriend. I’m on the fence about chokers being back- I love them on other people, but wonder if I can pull ’em off. I need to go and try a few on!
